When Sally Stoodley suffered a massive stroke in January 2023, it could have ended her lifelong passion for walking and adventure. Instead, the determined Alton resident channelled her experience into helping others.
Sally founded the Alton Stroke Support Group after experiencing firsthand the isolation many of the 400+ stroke survivors in local GP practices face after leaving hospital. "I knew how lonely it could be without anyone who truly understands the huge changes stroke brings," she explains.
Refusing to let her reduced mobility stop her making a difference, Sally undertook a remarkable 150-mile pilgrimage along the Camino Inglés to Santiago de Compostela in her all-terrain buggy. Her goal? Raising funds for a new hoist at Twyford Stroke Unit after enduring hour-long waits for transfers during her own treatment. She made it to the Cathedral on her 85th birthday, walking those final steps up the aisle and raising over £3000.
Now Sally's launched STEPtember, inviting the whole community to set daily step goals throughout September and raise funds for three local causes: The King's Arms, Alton Stroke Support Group, and Mud House Children's Foundation.
"Every step matters," says Sally. "Whether it's 1,000 or 10,000 steps, we can all make a difference together."
Pick up sponsor forms at Sainbury's, the library, or Wilson/Chawton Park surgeries, or download from STEPtember website. Join the celebration in Market Square on 30th September, 10am-midday.
