Alton is also part of England’s rich literary heritage, closely connected to renowned author Jane Austen, as well as Elizabeth Gaskell and Edmund Spenser. On the outskirts of the town, the village of Chawton was home to Austen during her most prolific writing years. Walk the Writers’ Way, a trail linking Chawton to Selborne, where naturalist Gilbert White lived, and immerse yourself in the stories that shaped these great writers' works.
